For Challenge Junkies Only

So you've run a marathon, cycled through a century ride or two, and maybe even finished an Ironman triathlon. But now you're ready for a new and tougher challenge to one up your fellow endurance junkies.

You could swim the English Channel or climb Mt. Everest, but c'mon, let's be realistic, those people are nuts, right? Here are a few saner options to consider in 2007 for your athletic addiction:

1. Run an ultramarathon

The Badwater Ultramarathon is the ultimate Ultra, but each year the 90 participants are carefully selected and qualified according to strict criteria. Why? Because the course is brutal; 135 miles starting in Death Valley with 130 degree temperatures and ending at 8,000 feet elevation on the slope of California's Mt. Whitney. Fortunately, plenty of other ultrarunning races exist and a good site for info can be found at Run 100s.

2. Ride your bike for a long, long time

Race Across America (RAAM) is an annual bike ride that starts in San Diego and ends in Atlantic City. In addition to a support crew, you'll also need to qualify for RAAM in another cycling ultradistance race. Qualifiers can be found here.

3. Try an Adventure

Each adventure race offers multiple unique challenges throughout the hours/days of the event. If you've seen any on television, like the EcoPrimal Quest event, you know that most include varied amounts of jogging/hiking, mountain biking, orienteering, and a water portion or two.
