Do you eat cereal?

What's for breakfast? In our house cereal is huge...for breakfast, snacking and especially as a dessert. We typically have 10+ boxes in the cupboard and about 4-6 different types/brands/flavors.

But, just as with energy bars, comparing labels can be tricky. And depending upon your food goal (lots of calories, minimal calories, flavor, bulk), knowing more about what you put in your bowl can help you achieve that goal.

So we're taking a poll: Tell us what breakfast cereal you prefer, how much you eat, and your food/nutrition goal.

We'll tally the results and put together a product comparison, much like we did for energy bars--which we plan to update in the next several months.

First, and foremost recognize

First, and foremost recognize that breakfast is a key meal. Eat something. It jump starts the metabolism. Shoot for 200-400 calories and try for a balance of fiber, fruit and protein. Cereals can be great for one's diet if you stick to varieties that are low in sugar. Sugar is the problem. And be careful about portion size. Higher fiber cereals will fill you up more and are good for your digestive system. Look for serving sizes of 1 Cup and 150-200 calories with at least 3 grams of fiber and less than 7 grams of sugar.

I love cereal and as a

I love cereal and as a college student and athlete it is hard to get a good meal so cereal is a great substitute when need be. I usually eat plain Cheerios because I want to watch out for all the sugar in some cereals but at times I like to mix them. Like I will take cheerios and then put a small amount of frosted flakes in there to get some sugar in it. It works but I do wonder how much cereal is too much cereal? I work out ever day and do an intense workout because I am a wrestler so I burn tons of calories but I eat probably two bowls of cereal a day when there is nothing good to eat in the cafeteria. I take protein shakes to get the protein needed and eat some veggies and fruit plus a bowl of cereal but like I said I do wonder about the calorie intake.

I eat the safeway clone of

I eat the safeway clone of Honey bunches of oats (HBO), or HBO itself. GOOOD stuff, and it's fairly healthy, it has oats for fiber, almonds for brain food, and honey for your immune system. I just eat too much, you're supposed to eat like 3/4 cup, i eat like 3 or 4 cups.... and non fat milk.

Does anybody really eat only 3/4 cup? it seems too little.

Omg I thought it was juat me

Omg I thought it was juat me lol Ok im not alone. I have a problem when it comes to just cereal. I overdue it. And after i eat i go for my morning jog and walk. Thats last over an hour, than im into the house chores which last all day. BTW my next meal doesnt happen until 6pm or 7 if I feel like it, and that is because I still am thinking of the cereal I ate too much of and im afraid ill gain weight. What do I do to break this habbit?

I eat Fresh Market's lo-fat

I eat Fresh Market's lo-fat strawberry granola or Kashi, but not just any box of Kashi b/c some of their cereals are like chewing on cardboard. I prefer the Kashi Orchard Spice granola. The Kashi GoLEAN crunch is ok. I prefer a high fiber intake with my morning cereal, which means I usually add fresh fruit. Special K just made a hi-protein version of their flakes. That might be worth evaluating. My fitness goals are to lose body fat and develop more lean muscle mass.

Where are all the kid cereal

Where are all the kid cereal eaters? Sure, I eat oatmeal, lots of it. But, nothing is better before I head out the door for a swim, ride or run than a cup of sugary kid cereal. If you buy the single serving travel boxes, its 110 calories of simple sugar energy!

Cheerios. All Cheerios. But

Cheerios. All Cheerios. But only normal Cheerios. Not those bastardized Honey Nut or Frosted Loop Cheerios.

I'm in pretty good shape. I bike a lot.

I never eat cold cereal.

I never eat cold cereal. Only stovetop cooked oats with flaxseeds and little spice. Keeps me going all morning. My bodyfat is a steady 16.5%.

I used to eat cereal for

I used to eat cereal for breakfast, now I switched to Oat Bran which has helped me lose some serious weight. We used to eat Healthy Cereal, i just would eat too much.
