Yes, you may have guessed it, I have jury duty. My summons arrived two weeks ago and I admit that I was very tempted to dial the automated number and postpone.
But, I had no good reason to do so. Yes, I'm the primary care giver for our daughter and I work 20+ hours each week spreading the health and fitness "love," BUT I can spare 3-5 days. When it comes down to it, I truly believe jury duty is my civic duty.
So I packed my bag (lunch, thermos of Chai, computer, magazines, books) and headed out at 7:30 am.
Lessons Learned/Observations
Don't bring a metal spoon ; I had to take mine back to my car.
Welcome a change in the "schedule." I'm trying. This is very difficult for me.
Listen (Eavesdrop). I heard the words "Adidas and sales," so I jumped in and gave the young woman my card. And I learned a little too.
Learning about complete strangers is hopeful. As I listened to the first 12 recite their biographical information (name, occupation, family etc.,), I was impressed. Scientists, teacher, biologist, salesperson, retired professionals and others were there, like me, to serve. There's just something good about seeing people give--it builds and strengthens community.
I need my yoga. No surprise there. I'm on lunch break now. I'll know later whether I need to return Monday or am "off the hook." But sitting around for hours, makes me tired and stiff!
